We’ve had a busy few months at Sapperton Wilder, and we couldn’t have done it without our incredible community. A huge thank you to all the volunteers and the team from CPRE Gloucestershire and Stroud Valleys Project who braved the wind and relentless rain on more than a few occasions to help us plant a staggering 800 metres of new hedgerow this year.
The Project in Numbers
- 4,000 native saplings planted
- 500m of hedgerow established in 2025
- 800m of hedgerow added in 2026
- 1.3km of total new wildlife corridors and increased connectivity
Every inch of hedgerow we plant creates a vital “nature corridor.” These hedges provide food and shelter for birds and small mammals, while offering a safe, sheltered route to travel across the landscape.
A Living Legacy: Richard’s Hedge
One event held a particularly special meaning for us. We co-hosted a planting day with CPRE to honour the memory of their former Vice Chair, Richard Lloyd MBE. Richard dedicated his life to protecting the British countryside, and it felt only fitting to plant a legacy in his name.
Over thirty volunteers joined Richard’s family to plant a 100m stretch of hedgerow along the western boundary of the Northern Block. We were also honoured to welcome South Cotswolds MP, Roz Savage, who unveiled a commemorative plaque. It now stands alongside “Richard’s Hedge” as a lasting tribute to a man who gave so much to nature and the environment.

What’s next?
Our new saplings have certainly had plenty of water lately! As we head into the warmer months, the next step is to add woodchip mulch to help them retain that moisture through the spring and summer.
